THESSALONIKI AIRPORT (SKG) INFORMATION

Thessaloniki Airport is officially known as Thessaloniki Airport Makedonia (Greek: Κρατικός Αερολιμένας Θεσσαλονίκης). It is an international airport that serves Thessaloniki, which is the second-largest city in Greece. The airport is located 8.1 miles/13 km southeast of the city, in Thermi.

The nearest, alternative, international airport is Kavala International Airport (KVA) located 126 miles/203 km from Thessaloniki Airport. The capital city of Greece is Athens.

This international airport is the third largest airport in Greece just after Athens International Airport and Heraklion International Airport. Thessaloniki Airport opened in 1930 and is the third busiest in terms of passengers served. In 2019, the airport handled 6,897,057 passengers and in 2020 the airport served just 2,317,336 passengers (due to the Covid-19 pandemic).

Thessaloniki Airport carries the international airport code of SKG (IATA) and LGTS (ICAO). The airport sits in a slightly elevated position at 22 feet/7 meters above sea level at 40°31′11″ N and 22°58′15″ E.

Airport Access

Thessaloniki Airport provides assistance for disabled travelers and Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM). All travelers who will require assistance at the airport should make a request in advance. This should be done by contacting either the airline or the travel agency at least 48 hours before the official departure time of the flight. If needed, you will be able to find assigned staff to help provide assistance to passengers with disabilities every day of the year, at SKG Airport. Please also be aware that if you are bringing a recognized assistance dog it is required that you make a request to the airline or travel agency at least 48 hours before the departure time of your flight.

Once passengers arrive at the Thessaloniki Airport, disabled travelers and PRM should make their announcement to the assigned staff. This can be done either at the airport’s designated PRM point or at the respective airline’s check-in counters.

At Thessaloniki Airport you will find staff who can assist any disabled passenger with all the necessary requirements, including getting to and from the aircraft, getting to the restroom, purchasing food, beverages, or tax-free items.

Thessaloniki Airport “Makedonia” is made fairly easy to reach by car. The airport is located at Mikra, 10 miles/16.5 km southeast of central Thessaloniki. From here travelers can get to the airport from the A25 Motorway (Thessaloniki - N. Moudania National Road). The drive to and from the city center and SKG Airport takes approximately 25-30 minutes.

Upon arrival at the airport, all visitors will find an extensive car parking area that is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. The parking area includes everything from long-term parking to short-term parking. All car parking facilities at Thessaloniki Airport are unsheltered and within walking distance of the passenger terminal. Designated disabled parking is available opposite the terminal entrance.

Terminal Information

Thessaloniki Airport operates two runways; Runway 10/28 which is 11.286 feet/3.440 meters long and runway 16/34 which is 7.907 feet/2.410 meters long.

Furthermore, the airport serves just one terminal, yet it consists of three floors. The ground floor serves only arrivals and is divided into two sections - international and domestic arrivals. The second floor serves departure flights and also facilitates a shopping center. Here passengers will find everything from 34 check-in counters, waiting areas, stores, bars, etc. The third floor includes two restaurants and several bars, where visitors can enjoy views of the runways. In addition, the top floor holds two passenger lounges. An additional terminal is to be opened in 2021.

Transfers to and from Thessaloniki Airport

All visitors will find comfortable travel options to and from the airport via buses and taxis, as well as a wide choice of rental cars at Thessaloniki Airport. 

Passengers will find transit bus service provided between Thessaloniki Airport and the city center of Thessaloniki. The bus service runs every 30 minutes and the trip to the city center takes approximately 40-50 minutes. This is a non-stop bus service to and from the city center, which includes bus route no. X1 “KTEL – Airport” (day service) and bus route no. N1 “KTEL – Airport” (night service).

There is no direct train connection from Thessaloniki Airport to the city center of Thessaloniki. However, once passengers get to Thessaloniki by bus, taxi, or car there are excellent railway connections from the Central Railway Station to take you to your further destination.

Furthermore, taxis are available at Thessaloniki Airport 24 hours a day, every day of the week. The taxis at the airport are all metered taxi services and are available outside the passenger terminal building.  A taxi trip from Thessaloniki Airport to the city center takes approximately 30 minutes depending on traffic. The cost of the journey is normally between 20-30 Euro.
