Thessaloniki Airport is a beautiful and popular destination for leisure flights during the European summer season. It is the third-busiest airport in Greece in terms of passengers served. In 2019, the airport handled 6,897,057 passengers and in 2020 the airport served just 2,317,336 passengers (due to the Covid-19 pandemic).

Thessaloniki Airport Ground Transportation

Thessaloniki Airport is located approximately 8.1 miles/13 km southeast of the city, in Thermi. 

Visitors traveling to and from Thessaloniki Airport will be able to find easy and comfortable transfer opportunities, including:

• Buses: Passengers will find a transit bus service provided between Thessaloniki Airport and the city center of Thessaloniki. The bus service runs every 30 minutes and the trip to the city center takes approximately 40-50 minutes. This is a non-stop bus service to and from the city center, which includes bus route no. X1 “KTEL – Airport” (day service) and bus route no. N1 “KTEL – Airport” (night service).
• Trains: There is no direct train connection from Thessaloniki Airport to the city center of Thessaloniki. However, once passengers get to Thessaloniki by bus, taxi, or car there are excellent railway connections from the Central Railway Station to take you to your further destination. 
• Taxis: Taxis are available at Thessaloniki Airport 24 hours a day, every day of the week. The taxis at the airport are all metered taxi services and are available outside the passenger terminal building.  A taxi trip from Thessaloniki Airport to the city center takes approximately 30 minutes depending on traffic. The cost of the journey is normally between 20-30 Euro. 
• Airport Shuttles: Passengers can find various hotels and resorts that provide a shuttle service for your disposal to get you to and from Thessaloniki Airport.
• Car Rental Companies: All travelers can book a rental vehicle through one of the operating car rental companies that serve Thessaloniki Airport.

Thessaloniki Airport “Makedonia” is made fairly easy to reach by car. The airport is located at Mikra, 10 miles/16.5 km southeast of central Thessaloniki. From here travelers can get to the airport from the A25 Motorway (Thessaloniki - N. Moudania National Road). The drive to and from the city center and SKG Airport takes approximately 25-30 minutes.

Drop-off and pick-up of passengers at Thessaloniki Airport

All guests at Thessaloniki Airport can find easily accessible drop-off and pick-up areas.

If visitors are going to pick up or drop off a passenger at SKG Airport they can use the pick-up/drop-off zone. This is located at the short-term parking lot for departures and is reserved for picking up and dropping off passengers. The first 20 minutes of parking here is free. The walking distance to the terminal is very short, making this a convenient spot for any pick-ups or drop-offs.

Thessaloniki Airport - Special Need Services

Thessaloniki Airport provides assistance for disabled travelers and Persons with Reduced Mobility (PRM). All travelers who will require assistance at the airport should make a request in advance. This should be done by contacting either the airline or the travel agency at least 48 hours before the official departure time of the flight. If needed, you will be able to find assigned staff to help provide assistance to passengers with disabilities every day of the year, at SKG Airport. Please also be aware that if you are bringing a recognized assistance dog it is required that you make a request to the airline or travel agency at least 48 hours before the departure time of your flight.

Once passengers arrive at the Thessaloniki Airport, disabled travelers and PRM should make their announcement to the assigned staff. This can be done either at the airport’s designated PRM point or at the respective airline’s check-in counters.

At Thessaloniki Airport you will find staff who can assist any disabled passenger with all the necessary requirements, including getting to and from the aircraft, getting to the restroom, purchasing food, beverages, or tax-free items.
